What Is Naturopathic Medicine?
Hippocrates is famous as “The Father of Medicine” because he collected proven medical practices, developed a scientific approach to healing, and established many of the philosophies all doctors still adhere to. However, with ever-increasing dependence on pharmaceutical solutions the focus of medicine has frequently become treating symptoms rather than the focus on wellness and resolving root causes of disease espoused by Hippocrates.
Naturopathic Doctors utilize the best of modern, science-based diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with a focus on understanding what is causing the health issue and a willingness to include proven natural methods to resolve disease. The word “naturopathy” was introduced in 1892 to describe this approach that combines the best of modern science plus natural therapeutics. The official six principles of naturopathic medicine are very similar to the principles Hippocrates first established over two thousand years ago.
1. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Nature)
2. Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam)
3. First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere)
4. Doctor as Teacher (Docere)
5. Treat the Whole Person
6. Prevention
The Scope of Practice for Naturopathic Doctors
Under California state law, NDs have a broad scope of practice and are licensed as primary care doctors. NDs can diagnose, order lab and imaging tests, and treat illness with natural therapies. NDs can also prescribe all hormones independently and can prescribe many other drugs under the written supervision of an MD or doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO)..
