News: Bastyr University Naturopathic Medical Students Participate in CNDA Lobby Day

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Sacramento, CA - More than twenty Bastyr University naturopathic medical students and staff met in Sacramento to support access to naturopathic medicine care in California. The California Naturopathic Doctors Association (CNDA) hosts this annual lobby day to bring together naturopathic doctors (NDs), medical students and advocates of naturopathic medicine at the capitol for a morning training on the legislative process followed by an afternoon of meetings with legislators.

For naturopathic medical students, the CNDA lobby day provides an excellent opportunity for direct involvement with government affairs and an opportunity to engage with practicing doctors from across the state. The visits offer state legislators an opportunity to learn more about the value of naturopathic medicine and how their legislative support can increase access to naturopathic medical health care for their constituents.

Making the journey to Sacramento requires a commitment from students who take time away from their studies or breaks to attend. “I am impressed with the dedication to civic engagement demonstrated by our students at the state, federal and international level” says Bastyr University Center for Health Policy Leadership Director Heather Carrie, who participated in the CA Lobby Day. “In addition to state events, Bastyr students regularly attend national legislative conferences in Washington DC and with global initiatives also. Fourth year naturopathic medical student Griffin McMath served as the first official delegate to represent ND students at the World Health Assembly in Geneva. Bastyr students excel in leadership!”
